Battery Care Tips for Floor Scrubbers: Maximize Battery Life and Performance

Proper battery care is the single most important factor in extending the life of your battery-powered floor scrubber. A well-maintained battery can last 3-5 years for lead-acid and 5-8 years for lithium-ion. Neglect can cut that lifespan in half.

Lithium-Ion Battery Care

Charging: Use only the charger provided by the manufacturer. Avoid charging in extreme temperatures (below 0°C or above 45°C). Partial charging is fine and actually beneficial for lithium batteries. Full discharge is not required and can reduce lifespan.

Storage: Store at 40-60% charge if the machine will not be used for extended periods. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Ideal temperature range: 10-25°C.

Maintenance: Lithium batteries require no routine maintenance. Keep terminals clean and dry. The Battery Management System (BMS) handles all protection functions automatically.

Lead-Acid Battery Care

Charging: Always fully charge after each use. Never leave a discharged battery for more than 24 hours. Use the correct charger profile for your battery type (wet, AGM, or gel). Charge in a well-ventilated area.

Watering: Check water levels weekly. Use only distilled or deionized water. Fill after charging (electrolyte expands when charged). Keep plates covered by 10-15mm of electrolyte.

Cleaning: Keep battery tops clean and dry. Neutralize any acid spills with baking soda solution. Clean terminals with a wire brush and apply anti-corrosion spray.

Common Battery Problems

Sulfation: Occurs when lead-acid batteries are left discharged. Prevents recharging. Prevent by keeping batteries fully charged.
Thermal runaway: Rare but dangerous. Prevent by using correct charger and monitoring battery temperature during charging.
Capacity fade: Normal over time. Accelerated by deep discharges, high temperatures, and improper charging.

When to Replace

Replace the battery when: runtime drops below 60% of original capacity, charging takes significantly longer than normal, physical damage (cracks, bulges, leaks) is visible, or the battery is beyond its expected service life.
