Floor Scrubber vs Floor Sweeper: Key Differences and When to Use Each

Many facility managers confuse floor scrubbers with floor sweepers. While both clean floors, they serve different purposes and are suited for different applications.

What Is a Floor Sweeper?

A floor sweeper uses rotating brushes to sweep dry debris into a collection hopper. It does not use water or cleaning solution. Sweepers are ideal for: large areas with dry debris (wood chips, packaging materials), outdoor use, and pre-cleaning before scrubbing.

What Is a Floor Scrubber?

A floor scrubber uses water, cleaning solution, and rotating brushes to scrub the floor, then a squeegee and vacuum system to pick up the dirty water. Scrubbers are ideal for: removing embedded dirt and stains, cleaning oily or greasy floors, achieving hygienic cleanliness levels, and improving floor appearance.

Key Differences

Cleaning method: Sweepers use mechanical sweeping + vacuum. Scrubbers use scrubbing + water recovery.

Result: Sweepers remove loose debris. Scrubbers deep clean and sanitize.

Floor condition: Sweepers leave floor dry. Scrubbers leave floor clean but wet (dries in 5-15 minutes).

Application: Sweepers for construction sites, outdoor areas, initial debris removal. Scrubbers for finished floors, indoor spaces, hygiene-critical areas.

Can One Machine Do Both?

Some advanced scrubbers have pre-sweep capability. The BC1250 heavy-duty scrubber can handle light debris while scrubbing. However, for heavy debris, a dedicated sweeper or pre-sweeping is recommended to avoid clogging the scrubber's recovery system.

Recommendation

Most facilities need both: a sweeper for dry debris and a scrubber for wet cleaning. However, if your facility mainly deals with dust and light dirt, a high-quality scrubber alone may suffice. Contact BIOCCE for a facility assessment.
