The battery is the heart of any battery-powered floor scrubber. The choice between lithium-ion and lead-acid technology significantly impacts performance, operating cost, and total cost of ownership.
Lifespan and Cycle Life
Lithium-ion: 2,000-3,000 charge cycles (5-8 years typical life).
Lead-acid: 500-1,000 charge cycles (2-3 years typical life).
Lithium batteries last 3-4x longer, making them more economical over the machine’s lifetime.
Charging Time
Lithium-ion: 1-2 hours for full charge. Opportunity charging (15-30 min during breaks) tops up without reducing battery life.
Lead-acid: 8-10 hours for full charge. Must be fully charged before use. Cannot opportunity charge.
Weight
Lithium-ion: 60-70% lighter than equivalent lead-acid. Reduces machine weight by 50-80kg, improving maneuverability and floor loading.
Maintenance
Lithium-ion: Zero maintenance. No water refilling, no terminal cleaning, no equalization charging.
Lead-acid: Weekly water level checks, terminal cleaning, equalization charging, ventilation required.
Total Cost of Ownership
Despite higher upfront cost (2-3x), lithium batteries deliver lower TCO due to longer lifespan, reduced labor for maintenance, higher productivity (no charging downtime), and better energy efficiency.
Safety
Modern lithium batteries with BMS (Battery Management System) are safe for industrial use. They include overcharge protection, temperature monitoring, and short circuit prevention. Lead-acid batteries require proper ventilation for hydrogen gas produced during charging.
